Biff Bam Pop’s Holiday Gift Guide 2014: Galleries & Museums

AGOOver the past few weeks, we here at Biff Bam Pop! have been listing a number of great holiday gift ideas to give to friends, loved ones and special some ones. And there is still lots more – LOTS MORE – to come this month!

But it got me thinking: instead of giving a product as a gift this season, how about giving an experience? How about an idea that’s slightly underused this time of year?

Follow me after the jump to a place full of experience: the galleries and museums of this world!

Whether you live in Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Manchester, Siena, Dortmund, Adelaide, or Manilla, somewhere fairly close to you, is a galley or a museum. And it’s just waiting for you and a lucky gift recipient to visit.

Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve been.

ROMActually, the chances are pretty good that your local house of history and/or art has a great exhibit going on right now – beyond the regular collection of artifacts, sculptures and paintings that they showcase every day. I know that here in Toronto, where I live, The Art Gallery of Ontario has got great , current shows, on painter Alex Colville (loved it – and it even includes comic books!) as well as Michelangelo (on loan from the Casa Buonarroti in Florence). The Royal Ontario Museum has a fantastic exhibit on loan from the Natural History Museum of London called Wildlife Photographer of the Year – great for outdoor lovers, as well as Cairo Under Wraps, a fascinating exhibit for historians and those interested in textiles.

Take advantage of websites and figure out what’s going on and when in your town, and pick up a ticket in advance of the holidays for both you and your loved one, presenting it in a nicely designed envelope or box.

ROM atriumThere’s a lot to be said about experiencing a little culture with someone close to you: the hour or two it takes to quietly meander through hallways of jewels or dinosaur bones or strangely abstract and interpretational paintings, has a way of bringing two people closer together. And the experience doesn’t have to be pricey at all! As a bonus you can easily extend the occurrence with lunch or dinner plans as well.

A whole day. An out-of-the-box event. A memory that stays warm for a long, long time.

Make plans to visit a gallery or museum with that friend or special someone for the holidays.
